The Vitry-sur-Seine power plant

After visiting it in 1936, Dufy painted the turbine room of the Arrighi thermal power station in Vitry-sur-Seine.

Commissioned in 1932, the power station bears the name of the supervising engineer, Jean Antoine Arrighi, who died prematurely. The architect was Georges-Henri Pingusson (1894–1978) who, with Robert Mallet-Stevens, built the Palace of Light where the Spirit of Electricity was first exhibited, in 1937. The three enormous windows and the majestic hall where Dufy highlighted the outlines of the turbo generators in white are recognisable.
